369: NEW LOGO & A LITTLE PAGE OVERHAUL

Miriam Skalli designed a new logo for me. Check out her page for her incredible work.

And while we were at it, I took the chance to do some little design changes on my website. In particular, now there are only three portfolios in my photography section.

New letter paper and businesscards coming soon.

It's amazing what you find when you're tearing down buildings, but what in the world is polar pure? Does anyone know?

365: A YEAR WORTH OF POSTS

365 shots or posts ago I forged the plan to take a shot once a day and to post it on this blog in order to keep practicing and to keep learning. I kept shooting and I learned quite a lot, but I realized that it was easy to take a shot. Nevertheless it wasn't as good of a shot as I wished for. Moreover my main work as a film editor kept me quite busy as well. In other words posting good shots in a day to day interval was quite a task.

Therefore after these 365 shots I will rearrange goals, targets and / or topics of this blog. Right now I am thinking that the next step will be to reduce the quantity to 10 shots or posts each month. To my own shots, videos and thoughts I might also add and include inspirational shots that I find in the web or life.

I have to admit I haven't thought everything quite through yet...but stay tuned. Next DVL Episode is coming soon by the way.

PS.:

For those who are new to the blog, this is the old "Get informed" Text:

I am going to take one shot every single day. Beauty, Fashion or just portrait. No matter if it's a snapshot or from a complete shooting, selfportrait, model or a friend, good or even bad shot, I will devote and commit myself to take (or at least just post) one shot a day.

This is being done by a lot of photographers, and therefore this is nothing special nor am I reinventing the wheel or anything. But that does not change the fact, that practice makes perfect, right?

362: IT'S GETTING COLD

You just know that it's getting cold when two pigeons huddle up in front of a bakerydoor regardless of all the people going in and out.

358: HELEN @ COCKTAILORS SHOOTING

I did some productshots of cocktails for the bar 3 Freunde in Hamburg. I will post the shots tomorrow.

This shot was actually taken with my new Iphone and the app Hipstatic. Quite amazed by the camera and the apps that are out. I know I posted a while back, that I wouldn't use a gadget with too many features cramped into it, but I must admit that up to now (one week) I am quite impressed by the feature set and the reliabilty of that phone. And even using it as a phone works.

357: QUEEN SY & WIZ

I did a covershoot for Queen Sy & Wiz, a Rap Duo based here in Hamburg. Of course I had to do a less serious shot. The rapgame does not have to be all serious and tough.

Also shot with Mamiya and Leaf digital back.

356: ULF...ANOTHER MAMIYA SHOT

Another shot from my weekend with the Mamiya 645 AFD and the Leaf Digital Back.
I'm leaning more and more towards portrait work right now. I do love shooting beauty and fashion, but doing some personal portrait work kind of feels "more right" for me the last couple of weeks.

355: Mamiya 645 AFD with Leaf Aptus II (A short review)

I had the whole weekend to test out the medium format camera with an incredible 52 megapixel digital back. Actually I am "against" a lot of megapixels, but I definitely admire bigger sensors. For those who wonder what the hell I am talking about: Most common consumer DSLR cameras do have a sensor of the size of approximately a stamp. Other DSLR cameras have a 35mm sensor, you might remember that size from your analog days ;-) And well a medium format camera is approx. 1,7 times bigger than a 35mm sensor.

In theory this means that the image quality is supposed to be better. Skin graduation, color, resolution, details etc. Other than that some say it does plain look better. I have no way to scientifical prove any of those claims, but after seeing the files I do have to admit it does look very good, and working with them is definitely different.

Allright, there is of course a catch: You have to work tethered. You can work with a compact flash card of course, but the files a rather big. Therefore the cards will fill up quite fast. Other than that, the displays (at least on the Leaf) are terrible. You can not verify sharpness or exposure at all on that display.

And the biggest catch is the price. I probably will never be able to afford a digital back, at least not in the near future. A decent digital back actually starts at approx. €7000.- That's where you wonder if the image quality difference compared to 35mm is really worth it. Especially if you mainly publish for web.

Bottom line: I love the results and if money wasn't the issue, I would go and buy one.

354: JANA...SHOT WITH MAMIYA

As posted last week, I rented a digital back for my Mamiya 645 AFD for the last weekend. A Leaf Aptus II 10 to be exact.

One of the three shootings of this last weekend was with Jana. Make up was done by Moni R.

More pictures coming in the next few days as well as my thoughts on working with a medium format camera.
